Jim Crow laws were state and local laws that enforced racial secregation in the Southern states following the post Civil War period of Reconstruction.  In practice, Jim Crow laws mandated racial segregation in: housing, transportation (buses/cabs), schools, hospitals, resturants, theaters, bars, bus stations, public bathrooms, drinking fountains, churches, swimming pools, outdoor recreation areas, beaches, lakes, retail stores, job sites, courtrooms, jails, and more.
